Community Living Stratford and Area

is a non-profit charitable organization governed by a Board of Directors.  The agency supports over 100 people and employs approximately 125 staff.

The name “Community Living” reflects the understanding that all people have a right to be included in all aspects of living in their community.  It helps everyone understand that people with intellectual disabilities want to be included and to contribute to community life.

Mission

The Association will:
  1. Advocate for the rights and quality of life of people with developmental disabilities
  2. Encourage others through education and promotion to believe
    in our vision
  3. Provide services and supports to people with developmental disabilities over the age of eighteen, and their families within Stratford area
  4. Be accountable to people we serve, their families, the membership, staff and the Government of Ontario respectively

Statement of Beliefs

  1. We believe in supporting people in achieving the best quality
    of life as possible, given the allocation of funds provided by the government
  2. We believe that all people are unique and planning starts from
    a position of dignity, respect and caring
  3. We believe all people have the right to take risks in making choices. Our responsibility is to ensure that people are supported to make informed choices based on experience
  4. We believe all people grow and change. We will encourage, support and respond to change

History of Community Living Stratford and Area

1957
The Stratford and District Association for Retarded Children was formed by Mrs. Eileen Langley to provide education and assistance for all retarded children in Stratford, Mitchell, Milverton and the Townships of Perth County. Portia School opened with Mrs. Elsie Meyer as Principal.
1958
The Stratford and District Association for Retarded Children was incorporated in 1958.
The Ladies Auxiliary was formed.
1959
Faith Bible Church on Erie St. was purchased to accommodate the Association’s growing needs and Mrs. Eileen Langley was Director.
1966
Annual Flowers of Hope fund raising campaign began.
1967
Perth County Board of Education took over Portia School.
Nursery School - “School of the Little Angels” - Director Mrs. Maureen Ryan.
1972
The Stratford and District Association for Retarded Children changed its name to the Stratford and District Association for the Mentally Retarded.
Eileen Langley Training Centre built.
1974
Handicapped children integrated into Anne Hathaway Day Care Centre.
1976
Residential - 157 Church St. purchased.
1978
Frederick Industries began beside the Eileen Langley Training Centre location on Frederick Street.
1980
Physically and Mentally Handicapped children’s summer camp (P.A.M.)
1983
Day Programs - Community Activity Program (Eileen Langley Centre formerly the ELTC)
- Vocational - Frederick Industries and the ELTC moved to Perth Street.
101/105 Maple Ave and the Supported Independent Living program formed.
1984
Devon St. Children’s Residence - long term accomodation for six children under the age of 18 and 2 beds for short term parental relief and emergencies.
1985
Perth County Mobile Toy Library formed.
1986
Literacy/Numeracy teachers began working in the day programs
PAM Camp discontinued
1988
Toy Library transferred to Perth Care for Kids. Church St. residence sold. Two smaller homes purchased. Employment Support Program began.
1989
Stratford and District Association for the Mentally Retarded became the Stratford Area Association for Community Living. Gordon Street Wheelchair Accessible Home - opened to house seven adults
1990
Employment Support Program began
1992
Eileen Langley Centre renovated for accessibility. Internal Board review of Association.
1994
Associate Home Program began
1995
Association Organizational Review conducted (Fred Treischl)
1996
Association Organizational Review recommendations implemented with new organizational structure.
1997
Frederick Industries closes. SWAN PACK, a private business, owned and operated by the workers was created. The West End Centre is opened at 400 Huron St. to be a drop in centre with a variety of activities available to those who wish to come in.
1998
Supported Employment Program transferred to Partners In Employment (PIE). All other day activities continue at CLSA.
2002
CLSA changed its name to Community Living Stratford and Area and adopted the logo of Community Living Ontario
   
2008
West End Centre closed.  The centre was no longer needed because more and more people were finding jobs and getting involved in leisure activities in the community.
Community Living Stratford celebrated 50 years of service to people in Stratford and surrounding area.
